Become a Certified GSP Counselor

The story of SEEK Group Support Psychotherapy (SEEK GSP) began with one woman’s vision to heal minds, restore hope, and transform mental health care in Africa.

While working as a psychiatrist at Uganda’s national mental health institution, Professor Etheldreda Nakimuli-Mpungu witnessed a painful pattern — people living with HIV often suffered in silence, battling depression, stigma, and hopelessness. Many struggled to adhere to treatment, not because of a lack of will, but because of the deep emotional pain they carried.

This observation sparked a life-changing question:
What if mental health care could be made culturally relevant, affordable, and accessible to everyone?

The Birth of SEEK GSP:

Determined to find an answer, Professor Ethel embarked on a Ph.D. journey that led to the development of Group Support Psychotherapy (GSP) — a culturally sensitive model designed to help communities address depression and trauma together.

Unlike conventional therapy that requires one-on-one sessions, GSP empowers lay health workers to deliver mental health support in local languages, using familiar stories, songs, and group activities that reflect African culture.

After years of rigorous research and clinical trials, the results were extraordinary —
participants receiving GSP showed a 99% recovery rate from depression within six months, alongside improved ART adherence and viral suppression among people living with HIV.

From Uganda to Africa:

What began as a small research project in Uganda soon evolved into a continent-wide movement. SEEK GSP has since trained hundreds of health workers and facilitators across more than 12 African countries, equipping them with the tools to provide effective, compassionate mental health care in their communities.

Through the SEEK GSP Academy, we now deliver these trainings digitally, allowing health professionals, social workers, and community leaders to access quality mental health education, from anywhere, at any time.

Today and Beyond:

Today, SEEK GSP stands as a beacon of hope for mental health in Africa.
Our mission continues — to empower, educate, and heal communities through evidence-based, culturally grounded psychotherapy.

With support from global partners and organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), SEEK GSP is redefining what accessible mental health care looks like, ensuring that no one is left behind.
